ALL DEATHS IN HARRY POTTER – RANKED

The Harry Potter novels by Joanne Katherine Rowling gained immense popularity all

over the world. There were eight film adaptations of novels too. The series give importance to all aspects a novel should have, but especially it emphasises death.

In this blog I shall rank the prominent deaths in the Harry Potter series based on their impact on Harry.

10. CEDRIC DIGGORY –

The death of Cedric Diggory occurred in the book/movie, ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet

of Fire.’ His death did not affect Harry’s daily life that much, but frequent nightmares occurred to Harry as it was the first time he saw Voldemort kill someone after his parents’ death 13 years ago.

9. NYMPHADORA TONKS – Nymphadora Tonks died in the second part of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’, while bravely fighting against the Death Eaters in the ‘Battle of Hogwarts’. She was the metamorphmagus member of the Order of the Phoenix, whom we all admire.

8. REMUS LUPIN –

Remus Lupin, died fighting against the Death Eaters along with Nymphadora Tonks in the ‘Battle of Hogwarts’ ( Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows- Part-II). He was the best Defense against the Dark Arts teacher during Harry’s days at Hogwarts. His death was very sad indeed.

7. FRED WEASLEY – Fred Weasley too died while fighting in the Battle of Hogwarts.

He and his twin George Weasley, were the naughtiest pranksters of Hogwarts. His death was a big loss for the Weasley family and all his dear friends.

6. JAMES AND LILY POTTER –

Harry’s parents, James Potter and Lily Potter died on the night of Halloween, 1981. Though Harry had only spent almost one year of his life with his parents and the rest without them, the death cast a great impact on him. But, if they did not die and if Harry had not got that scar, Voldemort’s death would be nearly impossible.

5. DOBBY –

Dobby, the House Elf died while disapparating with the Golden Trio from the Malfoy Manor as he got injured by a knife thrown by Bellatrix Lestrange(Deathly Hallows Part-I). He was freed in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and since then remained a trusted friend of Harry, Hermione and Ron. The death cast a great impact on Harry and thus, he decided to bury him without magic.

4. HEDWIG –

Hedwig died in Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows Part-I, during the Battle of the Seven Potters. He was the pet owl of Harry since his first year at Hogwarts and was Harry’s only friend at number 4, Privet Drive during the summer. He was one of Harry’s dearest friend after Ron and Hermione, whom Harry regretted to lose.

3. SEVERUS SNAPE - Professor Severus Snape died in Harry

Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part –II, when he was killed brutally by Lord Voldemort’s pet snake Nagini. He was of a very strong personality and protected Harry without letting him know. Though, his life had been tragic, he tried his best to protect Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from Dark Wizard attacks.

2. ALBUS DUMBLEDORE -

Professor Albus Dumbledore, the Headmaster of Hogwarts (1960-1997) died in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. He was killed by Professor Snape, as he (Dumbledore) had planned. He was the only wizard Lord Voldemort feared of all. He worked hard day and night to thwart Voldemort’s evil plans and protect Hogwarts, Harry and all his other loved ones. The death of such a brave and hardworking man left deep mark in Harry’s memories.

1. SIRIUS BLACK –

Sirius Black, also known as Snuffles, was Harry Potter’s godfather who was killed by Bellatrix Lestrange in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. He was the only person whom Harry saw as a father (after James Potter) and could completely trust. He was a prisoner of the Wizard Prison Azkaban because of only a false allegation. He was the closest relative of Harry who cared for him deeply and took every possible precaution to keep Voldemort away from him (Harry).

According to me, his death was the most tragic in the entire saga. The ranking would have been different if the deaths were seen from someone else’s perspective. For example, Dobby would almost make upto the third position if it was seen from Hermione’s perspective. But from the point of view of Ron, the ranking would have been more or less the same.

Joanne Katherine Rowling has penned as many as seven Harry Potter novels and one Harry Potter stage play. Apart from this she also wrote three books for charity: Quidditch

Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, in aid of Comic Relief and Lumos and The Tales of Beedle the Bard in aid of Lumos.

Under the pseudonym of Robert Galbraith, she also wrote the book ‘ The Casual Vacancy’ and the ‘Strike’ Crime Series.

She has received many awards and accolades including an OBE and a Companion of Honour for services to literature and philanthropy. She became the first British writer to become a billionaire.
