MS Excel is a spreadsheet application developed by Microsoft. It is an electronic

spreadsheet programme that can be used for storing, organising and manipulating data.

The first spreadsheet programme was released by Microsoft in early 1980, called ‘Multiplan’.

Features of MS Excel:-

§             Images and backgrounds,

How to Start MS Excel :-                               

Step 1 : Click on ‘Start’ button,  

Step 2 : Select ‘All Programs’,

Step 3 : Select ‘Microsoft Office’,

Step 4 : Click on ‘Microsoft Office Excel 2010’,

The Excel window that appears on the screen is called a ‘Workbook’. It is assigned a temporary name ‘Book 1’ by MS Excel. It consists of three worksheets by default.

Components of a Workbook :-                          

ؠ👉 Rows & Columns- A worksheet contains cells organised into vertical columns and horizontal rows. The total number of columns in a worksheet are 16,384. There are 1,048,576 rows in a worksheet.

ؠ👉 Cells-  A cell is an intersection of a row and column. It is a rectangular box. A cell is referred to  by its address, which is the column letter followed by  the row number, e.g.; A1, B5, Q37. This is known as a cell address. The cell in use is called the ‘Active Cell’, which is highlighted by a dark boundary. Its name is displayed in the ‘Cell Name Box’. 

Ø A cell is used to store data such as text, numbers, formulas, functions, etc. A cell can contain a maximum of 32,767 characters. There are 17,179,869,184 cells in a worksheet.

 ðŸ‘‰Range – A range is a group of cells which form the shape of a square or rectangle. A range is specified by writing the starting cell address, a colon (:) followed by the ending cell address. For example, the range is D1:E6, the range starts from cell D1 and ends in cell E6.

ؠ👉Formula Bar- The ‘Formula Bar’ displays the information  entered or being entered as it is typed in the current or the active cell. The contents of a cell can also be edited in the formula bar.

   ðŸ‘‰Status Bar – It is located at the bottom of the Excel window.  It gives the information about the correct selection.

Ø  ðŸ‘‰ Sheet Tabs The ‘Sheet Tabs’ appear above the Status Bar.  They are numbered as Sheet 1, Sheet 2 and Sheet 3.  The name of the Sheet currently in use is called the Active Sheet and is indicated in bold letters.

ؠ👉Creating a New WorkbookA Workbook is the place where all the work in Excel in done. The step(s) to create a new one are as follows :-

1.     Click on ‘File’ tab,

2.     In the backstage view, click ‘New’,

3.     Choose ‘Blank Workbook’ from the list. You can also choose a template,

4.     When you are done, click on ‘Create’ button.

MS Excel creates a new Work Book named ‘Book 2’.

A file name can consist of upto 255 characters. Excel 2010 Work Book is saved with the extension ‘.xlxs’. You may need to use the ‘Save as’ feature when you need to save a Workbook under a different name or in a different folder.

👉Entering Data

  1.      LABEL: The purpose of a label is to define the information on the spreadsheet, i.e. heading of columns;

 2.     NUMBER: This is the type of data that includes characters 0-9 and special characters, such as -,+, [, /, ?, >, <;

These characters always appear on the right side of the cell.

3.    3.      FORMULA: This allows various types of simple and complex calculations of the numeric data inserted in a cell, or a range of cells,. A formula is Excel always begins with an equal to (=) sign;

👉Editing Cell Content

The task of changing data either partially or completely, is known as editing. Cell contents can be edited in the following ways.

1.     Replacing cell contents,

2.     Using the formula bar,

In both the above methods, the new contents are replaced by typing them in.
